Mike Reflects
Sometimes I think I'm the kiss of death for TV sitcoms, as my favorites have a tendency to end prematurely.
My favorite sitcom was a show called The Knights of Prosperity that aired on ABC quite some time ago. The premise was that this would-be group of thieves intended to be like Robin Hood—stealing from the rich to give to the poor. The joke was that they were the poor.
The tagline, "robbing from the rich to give to themselves", made me think it'd be an instant classic, and, to me, it was.
Unfortunately, the "to me" did all the heavy-lifting there.
I found Reboot on Hulu shortly before it was announced that it wouldn't be returning for another season.
In addition to the extremely talented cast (which included Rose and many other very funny actors/actresses with comedy backgrounds), the writing provided a very clever look at the idea of rebooting a classic sitcom for a new generation of audiences.
In a way, it's quite similar to what we got from Hacks, where an old-school comedian teams up with a younger writer to revitalize her career in a landscape that had somewhat changed.
However, unlike Reboot and all the other shows I loved only to find out I was apparently one of the few, critics and audiences loved the initial episodes of Hacks as much as I did.
Maybe it's a fluke, like how a blind squirrel can still sometimes find nuts. Maybe I'm not as much of unlucky charm as I sometimes feel I am when finding a new TV show.
Whatever the reason, I'm glad at least some of my favorite shows go the distance like Hacks.
