Mike Reflects

This section is where I reflect on the interview & tell you my favorite parts, as well as relevant personal stories & memories.

As I’ve said before, I really enjoy getting to explore things with my interviews.

The art of writing and performing comedy is one of those things, because, while it can often appear simple, anyone who’s ever tried it (or even just been to an open mic to watch other people try it) knows that coming up with consistent and quality material is anything but.

This interview really gave me a chance to, in the brief time we had, look at the various things that one needs (but can forget) to consider in making quality comedy.

When I interviewed Jeremy Herrin earlier this year about Fool for Love at the Steppenwolf, the big thing I was excited to get into was how the audience for a play in one location might need a different something than the audience for the same play in another place.

Afterall, art is often contextual, especially when it comes to how we engage with it.

As an art form, comedy is no different.

While I think, and you may agree, that the interview’s end is probably its most memorable (and resonant) moment, I think it serves to underscore that point.
